If you want a pool for your backyard, but you are working with a tight budget, you may want to consider an above ground pool. It is an easier-to-install alternative to an in-ground pool, and they are simpler to maintain. You only need to do a few things to keep your above ground pool in good working condition.

Here are some tips for maintaining an above ground pool:

  • Install a sump pump in your home

This tip is not just for your pool but for your house as well. Unfortunately, many above ground pool owners neglect to install a sump pump. This is essential because if there are any leaks in your above ground pool, a sump pump will prevent water damage, mildew growth, and hazardous mould in your basement.

  • Test chlorine level

Chlorine is important for pool water because it can kill bacteria, algae, and harmful microorganisms. Although there is one drawback to chlorine, it can easily break down when exposed to chemicals from sunscreen, the sun, sweat and more. Also, a pool should have a chlorine level between two and four ppm. This means that you need to test your pool water often with a test strip specifically designed for above ground pools.

  • Weekly shock treatments

It is recommended that you do a weekly shock treatment using a powdered form of chlorine to kill bacteria, algae and other contaminants. In fact, doing shock treatment once a week will oxidise the contaminants and that could free up the standard chlorine you put in your pool.

  • Test the pH level

It is also essential to test your pool’s pH level to keep the water clean and crystal clear. You must maintain a pH level between 7.2 to 7.6 since this is the ideal pH level for our skin and eyes. Experts suggest that testing should be done every other day.

  • Running the pool’s pump at least six to eight hours a day

Your above ground pool’s pump must circulate the water at least six hours a day because this prevents the build-up of algae. Remember, running water will direct more debris into the filter and keep the pool clean and clear.

  • Regularly replace and clean filter

There are several types of pool filters, but they all do the same task: capturing contaminants and debris that may pollute your pool. That is why it is a must to clean your filter every once a week. You can do this by removing the hose down the cartridge. You should also replace the cartridge at least one every month or based on its manufacturer’s recommendation.

  • Vacuum Often

You filtration system is not enough to remove all the debris from you pool, you also need to vacuum your pool regularly. It is essential to vacuum your above-ground pool since this will keep the pool water clean and let chemicals such as chlorine work more effectively.
